Kyoto’s summer Tanabata celebration turns the Kamogawa and Horikawa river corridors into night walks of bamboo, wind chimes, and light installations — a softer, wish-filled counterpart to the city’s bigger summer festivals.
Expect illuminated bamboo paths, Milky Way–inspired light tunnels, food stalls, and tanzaku wish papers. Dress light; evenings are still humid in early August.
Photo tip: Blue hour along Horikawa is ideal. Tripods can be awkward in crowds — a fast prime and careful handholding work better.
